Academics for International Students
The information and links on this page will help you meet all the academics requirements and succeed at Dixie State University. For questions concerning your degree or major, meet with your program advisor or the Academic Advisement office. If you need help finding your advisor or don’t know who to talk to, ask the International Student Services staff for help.
Choosing a Major
Choosing a major is a process and not a decision you make in a few minutes. Academic Advisors can help with this process even though you may already have a major. The primary purpose of an academic advising program is to assist students in the development of meaningful educational plans which are compatible with their life goals. See the University Catalog for more details.
Academic Advisors will provide crucial assistance with your registration and help you as you progress toward graduation. It will be helpful for you to become acquainted with the academic terminology and vocabulary in the United States and that you understand its meaning. Your Academic Advisors can help you define the meaning of:
credit hour, GE, Semester, Term, GPA, etc.
See the Advisement Center for more details.
English Proficiency & Placement Testing
Dixie State University (DSU) accepts students of all levels of English proficiency. Upon arrival, students are required to take both of the following to determine class placement:
- A general English proficiency test (CaMLA-EPT)
- The DSU-ESL Writing Assessment
Both tests are taken at DSU upon arrival.
Students meeting English proficiency requirements may be required to take the College Placement Test (CPT) for placement into General Education (GE) and major coursework.
The DSU English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) program serves the needs of students for whom English is not a native language. The program is divided into four levels: Introductory, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced. Students enter the program at the level indicated by their placement test scores. See the ESL program page for more details.
Certificate of English Proficiency
The DSU-ESL program provides a Certificate of English Proficiency at both the Intermediate and Advanced levels. To receive the certificate, students need to pass each class with a B or higher grade. See the English Proficiency page for more details.
